The Whole U is excited to announce another month filled with exciting wellness-focused virtual events open to the greater University of Washington community! Throughout the month, you can learn about your Social Security benefits, how to avoid identity theft, how to reduce your plastic waste, in addition to summer wellness and fitness challenges. Thus, this July there is an exciting event for everyone!
2020 UW Summer Wellness Team Challenge
When: July 13 – August 21
This summer will no doubt look much different at UW. That’s why now is more important than ever to participate in The 2020 UW Summer Wellness Challenge, prioritizing your holistic wellness and building community with your colleagues, family, or group of friends! By participating, you and your team will help create an environment that encourages connection no matter where you are! Work together to conquer each weekly team competition, attend virtual events and debrief as a group, and get to know one another better while exploring 6 important areas of health. Plastic Free July

Join UW Recycling, UW Sustainability, and The Whole U this July in celebrating Plastic Free July with events, activities, and challenges all month long. Commit to reduce plastic waste and use, attend a free film screening, join Zoom discussions, learn steps to limit plastic consumption, and win prizes!

The Story of Plastic: Film Screening and discussion
Date and time: July 9, 11 am – 12 pm
Join UW Recycling, UW Sustainability, and The Whole U in celebrating Plastic Free July, a global movement which seeks to bring attention to plastic use and plastic pollution. To kick off the month, we’re hosting a free screening of the critically acclaimed documentary The Story of Plastic followed by an informative seminar and discussion via Zoom on July 9 from 11:00 a.m. to noon. Produced by the Story of Stuff Project, The Story of Plastic is a 95 minute film that takes a sweeping look at the man-made crisis of plastic pollution and the worldwide effect it has on the health of our planet and the people who inhabit it.
Plastic Free July Bingo!
This July join UW Recycling, UW Sustainability, and The Whole U in celebrating Plastic Free July with this bingo card full of tips and tricks to reduce your plastic consumption and use. See if you can completely check off the board! All throughout the month, UW Recycling will be hosting giveaways on their Instagram for those who can shout “Bingo”, so what are you waiting for? Financial Education with Fidelity Investments and TIAA
The Whole U hosts TIAA on campus throughout the year presenting various financial education seminars. Can’t make it in person? Join TIAA online for a live webinar! TruFusion Barre Class with The Whole U
Date and time: July 15, 12 pm – 1 pm
Join The Whole U and TruFusion for a great midday workout! TruFusion Barre combines ballet-inspired moves with elements of Pilates, dance, yoga and strength training. Class will incorporate classic dance moves with a focus on high reps of small range movements to feel the burn! This class is for all levels. Equipment recommended: a chair or counter for balance, optional light weights.
Social Security: A Foundation for Planning Your Future
Date and time: July 22, 11:30 am – 1 pm
This popular seminar on social security is hosted by The Whole U and presented by Kirk Larson, a Public Affairs Specialist with the Social Security Administration (SSA). In this seminar, you will learn all about social security and how to collect. Get answers to your burning SSA questions including: What are the eligibility requirements for Social Security? How does early retirement affect your benefits? What programs are administered under the Social Security Act? And much more!
TruFusion Power Flow Yoga with The Whole U
Date and time: July 22, 6 pm – 7 pm
TruFusion Power Flow Yoga is an energetic yoga class where you will fluidly move from one pose to the next while connecting your breath to movement. Build strength, flexibility, balance and mindfulness in this 60-minute flow. This class is for all levels with options given for arm balances and inversions. We recommend you have a yoga mat or towel and water!
Mindful Meditation with Bonnie Duran
Date and time: July 29, 12 pm – 1 pm
The Whole U invites you to join Dr. Bonnie Duran for an hour seminar and mindful meditation practice discussing how to use mindfulness to address racism. People of color are experiencing heightened trauma from the senseless violence and systemic oppression faced daily and those who are white or with more privilege are looking both inward and outward. While there are no simple answers to immediately change the status quo or provide much needed healing, a contribution to the greater efforts can be found in the cultivation of mindfulness.
In this seminar and mindful workshop, Dr. Bonnie Duran will explore the following concepts: mindful techniques to help with trauma from experiencing racism, and how to use mindfulness to guide our external relationships and examine our unique role in racism.
Identity Theft 101 with WSECU
Date and time: July 29, 12 pm – 1 pm
According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) millions of people have their identities stolen each year. Identity theft can wreak havoc on your life and your credit…but there are steps you can take to help prevent it and ways to recover from it if you become a victim.
This workshop hosted by The Whole U will bring you up to date on the latest statistics, how identity theft happens and ways to prevent having it happen to you. Additionally, this workshop will take some time to discuss how to protect from and prepare yourself for any fraudulent unemployment claims during this trying time.
This workshop is being presented by WSECU Community Relations Educator Karen Zukaitis, CUDE.
