May is Bike Everywhere Month
In celebration bicycling’s many benefits, UW Transportation invites all of UW to take part in Bike Everywhere Month this May.
Did you know that University of Washington employees make over 21,000 bike commute trips to the UW in a typical week? Bicycling isn’t just great for your overall physical health; it also alleviates congestion on busy city streets and is good for the environment.
Everyone bikes for a different reason – from exercising and staying healthy, to spending time with their children, to cutting commute costs, or being better to the environment.
The goal is to celebrate the reasons that inspire us to hop on a bike and to make it as easy as possible to continue to make that choice every day by connecting participants with resources and knowledge that enable them to do so. So, whether you are a seasoned cyclist or haven’t been on a bicycle in years, this is the time to come together and celebrate biking!
Get involved and celebrate:
Transportation Services will be hosting a celebration station on the Burke-Gilman Trail for Bike Everywhere Day on Wednesday, May 14 from 7 to 10 a.m. to greet riders and provide some snacks and giveaways. The celebration station will be located on the Burke-Gilman Trail near the Life Sciences building.
Sustainable Campus Bike Tour with UW Sustainability
Join UW Sustainability for a lunchtime bike tour and discover some of UW’s most impressive sustainability features. This tour is on Thursday, May 15 during the lunch hour, beginning at noon.
Ride with a friend, try a new path, take a selfie or do other fun activities to fill out the spaces of a Bike Month bingo card. Return the card with at least one row filled and you will be eligible for prizes including a free bike locker or bike house space for a year!
The benefits of biking were no mystery to Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, who once wrote, “When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous, when hope hardly seems worth having, just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road, without thought on anything but the ride you are taking.”
