May may be the month for blooming flowers, longer days and (hopefully) rising temperatures. At The Whole U, May also means UW Fitness Day (May 8 at Husky Stadium), one of our biggest and most festive events of the year. It’s just one in a calendar packed with exciting in-person gatherings, including Get in the Game (in support of NMDP), Nurses Week, the UW Combined Fund Drive Environmental Nonprofit Expo, the PSO Spring Celebration and a U-District Clean Up on the One Seattle Day of Service. Read on to learn more about these in-person and many other online opportunities to engage in community and wellness all month long.


Daily 15-Minute Movement Break

Every Monday – Friday

Take a break from the grind and join The Whole U on Zoom every weekday for 15 minutes of movement. It could be yoga, stretching, fitness, strength or dance — every day offers something a little different. What’s always the same is the opportunity to pause your brain and energize your body while connecting with others. All are welcome. No experience needed.


Virtual Weight Training with Lauren Updyke

Every Tuesday & Thursday
6:15 – 6:45 a.m. or 7:15 – 7:45 a.m.

Calling all early birds who want to build more muscle into your mornings! Wake up every Tuesday and Thursday with Lauren Updyke for a 30-minute intermediate weight-training class. Each workout covers the total body, focusing on both large and muscle groups and finishing with the core and stretching. All you need is a chair and two sets of weights (between 5 lb. – 25 lb. at least)!

The Whole U, NMDP (the National Marrow Donor Program) and UW Athletics invite you to join us in Red Square on Thursday, May 2, to learn more about the registry that plays a crucial role in linking individuals battling life-threatening blood diseases and cancers with potential life-saving donors. Learn more about NMDP, receive a complimentary T-shirt, get a photo with Harry Husky and meet UW coaches and athletes!


Virtual Laughter Session

LOL for your health! Celebrate National Laughter Day and learn how a good guffaw can improve your mental state, immune system and relationships at this at this workshop led by Tita Begashaw and Daniel Willems, certified laughter leaders from the Harborview Tee Hee Hee Laughter group.


UW Fitness Day

Join fellow faculty, staff and students and The Whole U at Husky Stadium for UW Fitness Day, a one-of-a-kind, campus-wide workout celebrating the many ways we move! This year we will have 16 stations—including strength, core, cardio, dance and rest—led by expert coaches from Husky Athletics, UW Recreation, UW faculty/staff, The Whole U and UW fitness partners. Not in Seattle? No problem. Participate in UW Fitness Day events on May 8 at UW Bothell and UW Tacoma.

U-District Clean Up for One Seattle Day of Service

The Whole U and UW Medicine are gathering volunteers for the One Seattle Day of Service. This event is a collective effort to enhance the Seattle area through various activities such as cleaning, gardening and restoration. Our volunteer group will be collecting trash in the U-District, starting at Herkimer Coffee. All necessary tools will be provided, and further details will be emailed upon registration.


BECU: Tips for Teaching Kids Financial Responsibility

Exercise Safety During and After Pregnancy

Are you expecting—or expecting to be expecting? Join us for an enlightening webinar on balancing pregnancy with exercise led by Drs. Catherine Albright and Alyssa Stephenson-Famy of UW Medicine, who will review the cardio-respiratory and musculoskeletal adaptations that occur during pregnancy. They will discuss myths related to exercise during pregnancy and best practices for safe exercise, the limitations surrounding the evidence on activity restriction during pregnancy while also talking about which pregnancy symptoms and complications may require activity modification, and the relationship between exercise during pregnancy and birth outcomes.
