Join The Whole U and UW Medicine on a journey leading up to the Seattle half and full marathons in December! Build community as we train together and reach new goals. All levels of fitness are welcome to participate, whether you plan to enter the race or are wanting to support the participants by cheering and passing out water.

The core and spine are essential to form and function when running, walking or jogging. The core and spine are closely connected to the lower chain of your body and carry importance for injury prevention and strength while moving. Sean Matsuwaka, MD, RMSK is board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine. Maggie Catlin, D.P.T., P.T., S.C.S., is a board certified physical therapist at the Sports Medicine Center at Husky Stadium. The UW Endurance Club keynote features Dr. Mark A. Harrast, Medical Director of the Sports Medicine Center at Husky Stadium, Clinical Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine and Medical Director of the Seattle Marathon. In this virtual session, Dr. Harrast will offer an inside look at safety considerations for the Seattle Marathon, highlighting the unique efforts of the UW Medicine medical team. He will also share the joy of running from his unique perspective as an athlete. Dr. Harrast is an accomplished competitive endurance athlete training for and racing in triathlons and marathons. This keynote will explore the many facets of endurance running and walking, offering inspiration and sharing Dr. Harrast’s extraordinary experiences.

This webinar features UW Sports Medicine’s Randy Gladwish. Randy is a physical therapist at the UW Sports Medicine Center with over 20 years of experience. This talk will focus on injury prevention, an essential aspect of long-distance running and endurance sports. Whether it’s your first time following a training plan, or you are an experienced athlete, this session will provide practical tips on how to avoid injuries and keep your body in peak condition throughout your training. We will have a special focus on running and walking, but the tips shared will be relevant for all movers and shakers.

Join The Whole U and the UW Endurance Club virtually on Thursday, November 7 at noon for an insightful panel discussion featuring Sam Prakel, a professional runner for Adidas and volunteer assistant coach at UW, alongside fellow professional runners.

About Sam Prakel:
Sam Prakel, born in Versailles, Ohio, is an accomplished middle- and long-distance runner who competes for Adidas. He holds a personal best indoor mile time of 3:50.94, tying him for 13th all-time. Sam earned a bronze medal in the road mile at the 2023 World Road Running Championships and is a five-time All-American from his collegiate career at the University of Oregon, where he also won the 2018 Pac-12 1500m title.
Now a professional since 2018, Sam set a world record for the road mile in 2023 and claimed national titles in the 1500m and 3000m at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
With his experience both as an elite runner and a coach, Sam will share valuable insights into endurance training, recovery, and the mindset needed to succeed at the highest levels.
