The UW division of Intercollegiate Athletics is holding Husky Committed Service Week from May 15-18 this year. The purpose and vision of this week is to connect UW Athletics staff and athletes with the UW campus and the greater Seattle community by providing assistance, service, and support to those in need.

The entire UW community is invited to join UW Athletics on May 16 for a campus-wide backpack and hygiene product drive. Dropoff is in the E18 parking lot adjacent to Husky Stadium’s south side. Donations will be accepted from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. Hygiene products must be new; backpacks can be new or gently used.

Donations will be distributed to the following nonprofit organizations:

Treehouse: We envision–and strive to create–a world where every child that has experienced foster care has the opportunities and support they need to pursue their dreams and launch successfully into adulthood. Treehouse provides academic and other essential support for more than 8,000 youth in foster care across Washington state each year.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western Washington and Alaska supports seriously ill children and their families. The Ronald McDonald House in Seattle provides more than 28,000 nights of housing a year for families with children receiving treatment at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Boys and Girls Clubs of King County offer innovative and culturally responsive programs designed to empower youth to excel in school, become engaged leaders, and lead healthy, productive lives.

What can you donate?

Backpacks should be new or gently used and have zipper closures. Youth tend to enjoy character backpacks, while older kids prefer blank backpacks. Kids are hard on their backpacks, so quality is the most important feature!

Hygiene products for youth can vary by preference and culture, but in general the following products are always needed:

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Hair styling products (gel, pomade, combs, brushes, pins and scrunchies)
  • Deodorant/antiperspirant, body spray, talcum powder
  • Body wash and soaps
  • Toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss and mouthwash
  • Skin care/acne products
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Shaving supplies (razors, shave cream)
  • Baby wipes
  • Lip balm, makeup
  • Sunscreen

I could help organize the College of Built Environments if we could collect goods in a bin that we leave in Gould Court (like we did for the food drive.) If you can drop off and pick up the bin I can do the promotion. It might be better for us to just collect the hygiene products that way, but we could open it up if you want.
