With the school year underway and the beginning of fall last week, October is set to be a month for you to get started—or keep building—on how to take good care of yourself in and out of the workplace.
This month, The Whole U is again thrilled to bring the UW community a range of activities to boost your wellness, enliven your mind, and get you feeling collected during the first few weeks of fall. So, whether you’re looking to cheer on your favorite fall Husky Athletics teams, celebrate Yoga Month, or attend seminars on various health and wellness topics, clear your mind with everything October holds in store with the following activities!
Running on “E”: Adding Energy and Fun to Your Life – October 03 at the HUB, 12:00PM – 1:00PM
What are the best methods for keeping energy levels consistently high with longer hours, increased responsibilities, constant change, accelerated pace of business, and intensified pressure? Join UW Professional Staff Organization (PSO) and The Whole U for a workshop on how to maximize your work performance while enjoying it at the same time! Mental Health Benefits of Yoga On & Off the Mat with Danny Arguetty – October 11 at the HUB, 12:00PM – 12:50PM
Take time out of your work day and learn about the mental health benefits of yoga that extend beyond the mat with Danny Arguetty, Mindfulness Program Manager at UW, on October 11th, coinciding with the National Mental Health Awareness Week.

Inner Peace and Interdependence with Jhado Rinpoche – October 12 at the HUB, 7:00PM – 9:00PM
Join Jhado Rinpoche as he speaks on the mutual relationship between personal happiness and compassion for others, weaving together Buddhist teachings, personal stories and perspectives from his travels and reflections on contemporary life.
Tai Chi 8-week series, Every Friday, October 12 to December 14 at the HUB
Tai Chi is an ideal aerobic exercise for any age and can be practiced for a lifetime. Tai Chi helps maintain spine health and increase bone density. It is beneficial to the cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, and digestive systems, while also improving balance and the circulation of chi, an energy force that underlies traditional Chinese medicine and martial arts. These classes will help improve skills of self-centering, body relaxation, and slow breathing while practicing form movements, while increasing flexibility, leg strength, coordination, and balance.
- Yang Style Tai Chi, which gives in-depth, step-by-step instruction on the 24 form movements and Qigong warm-ups (noon to 1:00 PM). Register here.

Husky Men’s Soccer vs. Stanford – October 14 at Husky Soccer Stadium, 3:00PM – 5:00PM
Having started their season at 5W-3L, the Husky Men’s soccer team looks to win against Stanford in their journey to winning the Pac-12 conference and earning their 6th appearance in 7 years in the NCAA playoffs. Whole U Chinese Language Class Series: Level 1 – Every Tuesday, October 16 to December 4 at the HUB, 12:00PM – 12:55PM
Thinking of traveling to China or communicating with your colleagues from China? This 8-week course is designed for non-Chinese speakers who need help communicating while traveling in China. By the end of the course, you will be able to master the basic vocabularies for traveling, develop Mandarin (Putonghua) listening and speaking skills in order to understand common topics, and gain familiarity with Chinese culture. Husky Women’s Volleyball vs. UCLA – October 19 at Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion, 6:00PM – 8:00PM
With a strong 10W-2L record and a #13 national ranking (according to the latest AVCA Coaches poll), the Husky Women’s volleyball team will be playing against UCLA to stay in the top two spots in the Pac-12 conference for the 6th consecutive year. Expanding Your Notion of “Everyone” when Creating Digital Resources – October 22 at the HUB, 12:00PM – 12:50PM
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to access these materials if you’re unable to see, hear, or use a mouse? Join Terrill Thompson and Hadi Rangin, Information Technology Accessibility Specialists UW, to consider and demo some examples of common accessibility issues in action that will that help us to appreciate the challenges that some groups of people face. UW Benefits Fair – October 30 through November 1 at various UW locations, 10:00AM – 3:00PM
The Open Enrollment period begins November 1, 2018 to November 30, 2018, allowing for employees to review and make adjustments to their various benefit plans. This year, UW will be offering three benefits fairs at three different locations:
- Tuesday, October 30 at the HUB North Ballroom from 10:00AM – 3:00PM
- Wednesday, October 31 at the Harborview Medical Center Research & Training Building Lobby from 10:00AM to 3:00PM
- Thursday, November 1 at Health Sciences Building Lobby, 3rd Floor from 10:00AM to 3:00PM

Be The Match and Why Race Matters Kick-Off Event! – November 5 at the HUB South Ballroom, 5:30PM – 7:30PM
In an effort to increase the diversity of blood marrow donors, the University of Washington is proud to be a community sponsor with Be the Match, an education, research and advocacy organization managing the world’s largest bone marrow registry. To kick off the partnership, join The Whole U and UW and community expert panelists in exploring the role race plays in medicine and the essential need for multiethnic donors at a free screening of Mixed Match followed by a panel discussion with filmmaker Jeff Chiba Stearns, Alexes Harris (UW professor of sociology who benefitted from a bone marrow transplant), and more!
