Relive The Experience of ‘The Boys in the Boat’ with this year’s Whole U Scavenger Hunt!
Experience an adventure at work like no other with your team traveling back to 1936, the year nine rowers from the University of Washington united as one and unexpectedly brought home gold from the Berlin Olympics. The best-selling book The Boys in the Boat chronicles the inspiring story:
They came together and defied all expectations. In that spirit, we encourage you to form your own teams for this event and register now. All teams that finish will get the opportunity to sign the commemorative banner and take photos with their team. Those who participate in the Seattle hunt will have the chance to meet The Boys in the Boat author Daniel James Brown. Daniel will be at the final destination with The Whole U from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to meet faculty and staff, take pictures with teams, and sign your copy of his book if you have one.
All hunts will take you back through time on each campus. Walk in the shoes of Joe and the rest of the boys in the boat for a day. Learn how UW Tacoma’s first buildings were one of the most important factors of downtown’s revitalization. See sculptures that legend says watch over UW Bothell’s campus.
The Whole U has partnered with Groundspeak again and will provide the adventures on your smartphones to easily navigate and find each location. Only one phone is needed per team, and a paper version is available if you prefer. You can begin the hunt anywhere on campus and at any time during your work day. Your phone will direct you to the closest location first. As you find each location and uncover the clues, you will receive the coordinates for the next one closest to you. Once you have found all locations, the final destination will be unveiled and will be the celebration point!
For the competitive teams out there, have a member of the team time your race using a stopwatch and show your finish time at the final location. The fastest team for each of the five hunts will be awarded a ceremonial wreath like the 1936 Olympians. We’ll also announce the winners on social media for maximum bragging rights.
So who is ready experience your campus from the beginning and working as one with your team? Be inspired, have fun, and go for the gold!
